About Flinders University

Flinders University was founded in 1960 after the University of Adelaide was given permission to construct a second campus on 150 hectares of land in Bedford Park. Work began in 1962 after planning had started in 1961.

The Australian Labor Party (ALP) made the decision to turn the Bedford Park campus into an autonomous university after winning the State election in 1965. In order to formally establish Flinders University, named after renowned British explorer and geographer Matthew Flinders, the University Act was approved on July 1st, 1966. On March 7th, 1966, there were just 400 pupils and 90 faculty members in attendance. Its first chancellor was Sir Mark Mitchell, and its first vice-chancellor was Peter Karmel.
