FULL DESCRIPTION

Early Childhood Assistant is a two-semester program that trains students to work as assistants with young children, aged six weeks to 10 years, in early childhood settings. Emphasis is placed on basic skills development.

YOUR FIELD STUDY OPTIONS

Students complete a 14-week placement in semester 1 and a seven-week field placement in semester 2 of the program in a variety of settings. Students have the opportunity to work with children of all ages.

Field placement provides a continuum of experience that gives students the opportunity to integrate and apply theory to practice.

To support student learning outcomes and ensure you have access to facilities that reflect the best practices we consider essential, we own and operate 12 child care centres that are located across the Greater Toronto Area. These lab schools expose you to the kinds of environments where you will eventually work and provide valuable services to the families and communities that they serve.

PROGRAM STANDARDS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES

The graduate has reliably demonstrated the ability to:

  • Implement play-based early learning strategies that respond to individual and groups of children’s identified abilities, interests and ideas.
  • Maintain inclusive early learning environments that support diverse, equitable and accessible developmental and learning opportunities for all children and their families.
  • Observe, report, document and review children’s behaviour and their responses to early learning opportunities.
  • Guide children's behaviour in a responsive manner, both individually and in groups.
  • Maintain health and safety practices in early childhood learning settings.
  • Use professional written, verbal, nonverbal and electronic communications when working with children, families, colleagues and employers in early learning settings.
  • Comply with the regulations of the Day Nurseries Act, 1990 and other relevant legislation in daily work within early learning settings.
  • Work collaboratively with families and early learning professionals to maintain quality early learning environments.
  • Develop and implement an ongoing personal and professional development plan to support work in early learning settings.

YOUR CAREER

Graduates may find employment as assistant educators:

  • in child care centres
  • in nursery schools
  • as family-home child care providers
