This four-year honours degree programme encompasses a blend of musicology, music technology, composition, Irish traditional music, ethnomusicology and performance, and balances practical and theoretical approaches to learning.

Course Description

During this four-year honours degree programme you will undertake study in musicianship and performance across variety of genres from pop to traditional Irish music, in addition to music technology, composition, musicology, ethnomusicology and education. This programme meets the requirements of the Teaching Council for second-level school teaching.

Located in the Carroll's Building at DkIT, the Department of Creative Arts, Media & Music, students on the BA (Hons) in Applied Music have access to state of the art facilities including, rooms for group and solo performance practice, recording studios and the MacAnna Theatre. Opportunities for collaboration on projects with Music & Audio Production, Film & TV and theatre and film practice students frequently arise in this closely-knit creative community.

Performance is an important part of our degree programme, and students take part in various groups and ensembles, such as musical theatre or the Irish traditional music ensemble. Students are free to specialise in the performance of a genre of their choice (pop/rock, classical or traditional Irish music) from year 3. Students perform regularly in a variety of settings throughout the academic year, while regular concerts and masterclasses are given by visiting professionals.
