The digital world is increasingly shaping the way we think, communicate, work, and play. Our Digital Media degree will help you to become a creative producer with an array of technical and design skills, giving you the ability to produce original and striking multimedia projects across a range of platforms. Using industry standard facilities, you will develop a detailed knowledge of digital media tools alongside an understanding of the history and theory of digital media.

You will explore areas including:

  • Augmented Reality
  • Computer Animation, both 2D and 3D
  • Digital Imaging and Photography
  • Graphic Design and Visual Communication
  • Video Production and Motion Graphics
  • Web design

We put you, the student, at the centre of our teaching, enabling you to develop your own voice and visual style. By your final year you will have produced a range of dynamic and varied multimedia work and be confidently developing innovative answers to creative problems.

Why Digital Media?

This engaging and stimulating course offers you the opportunity to develop practical skills and knowledge of theoretical aspects of multimedia digital production. Today’s digital media, incorporating computers, the web, video games, digital television, film, smartphones, and so on occupy an increasingly important role in our lives, changing how we live, work, and play. The Digital Media course aims to explore this exciting field, offering you a wide range of opportunities to engage with digital media in creative ways, while also evaluating the critical and theoretical shifts that go hand in hand with these new forms of media production.

The course is based around three areas of study/practice:

  • Interactive design (including web design and augmented reality)
  • Moving image production (including 2D and 3D animation, video production, compositing, visual effects and motion graphics)
  • Still image production (including graphic design, visual communication, digital imaging and photography)

The course is designed around offering you the opportunity to create an effective, dynamic and professional skillset which displays the full range of your ability and talent.

In addition, the course has a focus on enhancing your future employment prospects, with employability skills embedded into each module. There is also a keen international element. In year two you will have the opportunity to undertake a project that involves a trip abroad to one of our international partners.

The course is delivered in the specialist facilities of the Canterbury Campus, offering an inspiring backdrop for the study of digital media. The course uses dedicated digital media suites, with professional level hardware and software, supported by dedicated technicians. The course team is comprised of research active staff and industry professionals, who will give you the support and skills you need to achieve your full potential in your creative projects and written work.

What will I study?

Using specialist facilities including computer suites to professional video and sound recording equipment, you will study modules in web design, computer animation (2D and 3D), digital imaging, visual communications, motion graphics, digital entrepreneurship, and other digital multimedia production skills including the core theory modules at each level.

Work experience

The course has established contact with new media companies and independent creative professionals in Kent, some of whom are employed to work as visiting lecturers. You will be encouraged to find work placements or internships outside of term time.
