Paramedic Science Foundation at Coventry University

A Paramedic provides specialist care and essential treatment to patients of all ages in a variety of dynamic emergency and urgent healthcare settings. Very often the first emergency service and healthcare expert on scene, they can administer a range of life-saving treatments and provide vital information and support to people suffering from a variety of traumatic injuries and/or medical problems.

As a student Paramedic, this course will prepare you to face the challenges that come with providing emergency and urgent care to an ageing and diverse population in the pre-hospital and out-of-hospital environment. This course aims to equip you with the necessary skills and knowledge to become a Health and Care Professions Council registered Paramedic after two years of study.

Course information

Successful completion of the course ensures that you achieve the required standards so that you are eligible to submit for HCPC paramedic registration.

Half of your course will be spent establishing a sound academic base to work from within the University. You will also undertake a compulsory practice placement where you will be treating real patients and working alongside registered Paramedics and health care professionals. 

During your time at the University, we will concentrate on a number of core themes. We have the opportunity to learn about the communication and professionalism skills required of a Paramedic, while developing a sound underpinning knowledge of anatomy, pathophysiology and pharmacology, along with necessary clinical skills. 

All of this will be supported by evidence-informed practice and proven clinical decision-making tools. We will cover all of these themes over the full two-year course, with in-depth focus on the academic and clinical practice needed to meet HCPC registration.

We work very closely with the West Midlands Ambulance Service Foundation Trust and many of our graduates who choose to stay with the Trust choose to work within the West Midlands or neighbouring ambulance trusts.

While most graduates initially choose to work in an NHS Ambulance Trust, the range of opportunities for a Paramedic is expanding. Careers available outside the NHS include event cover, forensic Paramedics and private ambulance services.

For those looking to continue their academic career, opportunities are available at Coventry for progression to a full BSc (Honours). Completion of this “top up” degree can be done at your own pace while in full-time employment. This can lead onwards to Masters, MPhil and PhD if you wish.
