The sports industry is seeing prolific growth – and it is now estimated to be worth between $600-700 billion a year to the global economy. Our course aims to help you acquire the skills and attributes to become a leader in this dynamic, growing sector.
As demand grows for sport management graduates with relevant expertise, skills and knowledge of the sector, our Master’s degree aims to prepare you to be a professional sport management practitioner, with the theoretical knowledge, skills and personal attributes to become a leader in your chosen sport sector.
Students who want to further enhance their employability will have the unique opportunity to convert this course into a 2-year MSc Sport Management with Professional Experience. This pathway, subject to additional fees, availability and a competitive application process, can give you the opportunity to conduct an extended professional experience of up to 12 months, taking place immediately after the two taught semesters and before the dissertation or consultancy project.

Our students benefit from industry-relevant teaching, and resources and support designed to help them succeed. These range from our modern library and computing facilities to dedicated careers advice and our impressive Students’ Union activities.
Course information
The educational aims of the course are to introduce students to a range of concepts and theories that will enable them to critically analyse sport organisations, contexts and functions.
This will allow you to develop your analytical and decision-making skills and your ability to apply knowledge and understanding of sport management to complex or difficult issues, both systematically and creatively, to improve business and management practice, including within an international context.
Sport industry-specific modules will help you develop a sound understanding of the sport business in order for you to be able to make a significant contribution to your employer.
Career prospects
The course is distinct due to its focus on employability through corporate engagement.
As well as the availability of an internship in the regular course and the longer professional experience option, this feature is further supported by practical and applied activities such as industry visits, guest speakers and the use of innovative assessments that put a strong emphasis on employability and industry engagement.
For example, students will be involved in a variety of simulation games to apply their knowledge into practice such as a crisis management simulation, a management simulation of a facility and a negotiation simulation. They will also have the opportunity to write a grant bid for a real organisation or prepare a bid video to host a sporting event. There are also various opportunities for students to engage in team work simulations and volunteering activities throughout the course.
Our graduates should be adaptable and reflexive sport managers, capable of filling senior management positions within the sector.
Where our graduates work
Previous graduates have secured exciting and rewarding positions in a wide variety of marketing areas such as brand management, creative advertising development, working with the leading organisations worldwide such as Airbus, Millward Brown, Silverstone and many others.
