Overview
Our Mathematics with Statistics BSc will give you a deep understanding of the fundamental aspects of both subjects. For statistics, we will teach you about a broad range of contemporary statistical methods and areas where it can be applied. For mathematics you will study the core areas of pure and applied mathematics.
You may transfer to the four year Mathematics with Statistics with a Year Abroad BSc pathway and spend your third year studying abroad, before returning to complete a final year with us. This depends on you reaching a certain grade average and being accepted by a partner university.
Key benefits
Description
Our course will develop your understanding and appreciation of the important role of the analysis, use, and representation of data in society. It will enable you to combine the conceptual and analytical skills that you will develop through the study of mathematics with the modelling and data analysis skills that you will acquire through the study of statistics. In doing so you will build a unique set of tools for the analysis of real world situations and solving problems.
You will acquire an understanding of the professional and ethical responsibilities of statisticians, and of the impact and role of data analysis and representations in a wide and varied range of contexts, particularly in the public domain. Our teaching will encourage you to pursue continual professional development in your working life.
Teaching
You are expected to spend approximately 10 hours work per credit for each module you attend in your degree, e.g. 150 hours work for a 15 credit module. These hours cover every aspect of the module: lectures, tutorials, independent study, coursework and preparation for examinations.
Career prospects
A degree in mathematics is one of the most flexible qualifications you can obtain, and as a result our graduates are among the best paid and the least likely to be unemployed. Many mathematics graduates become statisticians, actuaries, data scientists, accountants, and so on. More and more often they are also going into careers in life sciences or the City. There is also considerable demand for graduates of mathematics in the teaching profession.
