Overview

The UK Government has announced that nursing, midwifery and many allied health students will benefit from guaranteed, additional support of at least £5,000 a year. The funding will be available from next year and will not have to be repaid.

How should we care for people with mental health issues? What’s the impact of substance misuse? Why is family-centred care important? At King’s College London, we’ll help you answer these big questions and teach you how to help people during the most challenging times of their lives.

Nursing is demanding, hands-on and rewarding – and so are our courses. Our graduates take on roles in the NHS and other healthcare organisations where they plan treatment and provide high quality care.

Key benefits

  • Learn and qualify at the largest centre for education of healthcare professionals in Europe, where 100% of registered Mental Health Nurses found work within six months of graduating
  • Understand the theory behind nursing practice in the lecture theatre, then apply it to the real world on clinical placements and in our state-of-the-art simulation centre
  • Make the most of our connections with NHS trusts and specialist hospitals across London, including South London and Maudsley – the world’s oldest psychiatric ward
  • Learn from leading mental health experts, including our Dean, Professor Ian Norman, Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Nursing Studies
  • Get the support you need to succeed – we’ll do everything we can to make sure you graduate feeling ready to provide excellent care.

Description

As a mental health nurse, you need to be prepared for fast-paced, challenging situations. From forensic psychiatry to child and adolescent mental health, we’ve designed our course to equip you with the skills you need to help people facing a wide range of challenges.

In lectures, we explore the role nurses have in promoting a positive image of mental health, and the relationships between primary care and mental health services. Then, you’ll challenge yourself by applying your knowledge during placements in different environments. You’ll care for patients with a range of needs, from eating disorders to autism.

At King’s, you’re part of a supportive community. Our students are from different backgrounds, countries and cultures. If you need any help, you can talk to your personal tutor or get advice from programme leads who always leave their door open.

Course details

We teach a set curriculum to you to help you get to grips with essential areas, including applied human biology and nurses in society. You’ll also gain knowledge specific to mental health to achieve your registration as a mental health nurse.

In your second year, you have the chance to pick an optional module that matches your interests. You also need to find your own four-week placement. This completely depends on the experience you want – you could work at a local specialist hospital or even an orphanage in Peru.

Career prospects

Once you graduate from the course, you’ll be qualified with professional registration from the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). You’ll have everything you need to go straight into a professional role – or to do further research in academia.

Our alumni work in rewarding roles at London NHS trusts, and healthcare organisations elsewhere in the UK and abroad. And many of them go beyond a hospital setting, starting careers in research, GP practices and charities.

But King’s graduates also have qualities that are desirable to employers in the wider healthcare settings. Our alumni have applied their skills to rewarding careers in teaching and  management.
