Course format and assessment

Teaching

Teaching on the Physiotherapy programme brings together excellence in research and practice led by education, clinical and research staff who are experts in their field. We have a strategic partnership with clinicians from our local NHS trust partners, to provide some of the College based clinical and practical teaching. Interprofessional learning with students from other healthcare disciplines (including medicine, nursing, midwifery, dietetics, pharmacy and physiotherapy) and clinical simulation working in high and low fidelity environments and with actors and patient educators is highly valued by our students.

The programme is organized over 2 calendar years and comprises 180 Level 7 credits (totals approximately 1800 hours of student endeavour) plus a minimum of 1000 hours of professional practice clinical placements.

College-based teaching is arranged over 3 days a week using a blended-learning approach that integrates face-to-face campus-based activities (eg lectures, seminars, practicals, clinical simulation, workshops) with structured online and self-directed learning (e-learning, individual and in groups). A series of case-based learning opportunities exposes students to real-world scenarios that need to be solved using reasoning and existing theoretical knowledge.

Practice education is arranged in Clinical Placement blocks that are full time and take place in a variety of health and social care settings. Specific clinical placement hours are dictated by the placement setting and whilst typically are Monday to Friday they may also require students to undertake shift work, 7-day working etc.

Career prospects

On completion of the programme, you will be able to apply for registration to practise as a physiotherapist with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). This enables you to practise in a wide variety of settings and is mandatory for employment within the NHS. You will also be eligible to apply for full membership of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP).

Whilst a significant majority of recent graduates go on to work in healthcare including the NHS, they are increasingly taking on roles in emerging areas for Physiotherapists including Social Care, Public Health, sports and leisure, clinical and academic research and other graduate opportunities.
