This degree provides a strong scientific foundation in sport and exercise-related sciences and an understanding of how these relate to human performance and health. 

You'll learn about the key disciplines of sport and exercise science, including:

  • anatomy
  • physiology
  • biomechanics
  • psychology
  • biochemistry 
  • nutrition 

The degree is taught in our Faculty of Medical Sciences and draws on our expertise in exercise physiology, nutrition, sport and health psychology, and biomechanics.

Your programme will also include:

  • seminars and workshops from industry partners and applied practitioners
  • the opportunity to work closely with elite athletes from the University's Team Newcastle
  • optional vocational modules to help you hone your career plans and boost your employability
  • a major research project, to showcase your knowledge and skills

In your final year you complete a research project on a topic that interests you. This gives you practical experience of planning and conducting research, boosting your CV with desirable research skills.

Most students do their project work with one of our sport and exercise science lecturers in one of their research areas.

You may also have the opportunity to work alongside scientists from affiliated research institutes. You'll develop advanced scientific skills and get insight into a career as a researcher.

  • survey or questionnaire based

You'll be based in the School of Biomedical Sciences. The School is in the Faculty of Medical Sciences, which is also home to Dentistry, Medicine, Psychology and Pharmacy.

Situated next to Newcastle’s RVI hospital, we’re one of the largest integrated teaching/hospital complexes in the country. Newcastle's vibrant city centre is just a few minutes' walk away.

We've invested £32 million in brand new facilities for sports research and teaching. They include an: 

  • environmental chamber to enable the simulation of altitude, temperature and humidity. 
  • gait track
  • biomechanics laboratory
  • physiology laboratory
  • high performance suite
  • nutrition kitchen 
  • blood preparation and analysis lab 

The facilities also support performance and recreational sport. They include an eight-court sports hall, four squash courts, strength and conditioning gym, spin studio and gym.
