  • Become globally, socially and ethically aware of the contemporary business environment.
  • Enhance transferable skills to develop a multitude of professional competencies.
  • Develop quantitative and qualitative information collection, validation, processing and interpretation skills.
  • Have the opportunity to work abroad — with the possibility of Erasmus funding being available for European placements.
  • Grow into a confident, inquisitive and empowered individual who can work autonomously but also develop relationships of teamwork and co-operation.

Learn the specific behaviours and motivations of tourism consumers, industry operations, and understand the planning and development of tourism in various contexts and contemporary growth sectors in the industry. You can choose to specialise in adventure tourism and gain the skills and knowledge needed to manage and work in this dynamic and global sector.

Work placements

This course offers a variety of opportunities to develop your employability skills for highly skilled employment in the international tourism and hospitality industries. You will have the opportunity to undertake a year-long work placement in your third year of study. This gives you a real-world experience to prepare you for your future career.

Recent placements have included Disneyland in Florida, in hotels and resorts across America, Canada, Spain, France, Dubai and the Maldives, and with national and regional destination management organisations such as the Netherlands Board of Tourism and Conventions, the Isle of Man Department of Tourism, and Visit Peak District and Derbyshire, as well as for major tour operators such as TUI and Sunvil.

You can also complete a 'Learning in the Workplace' semester where you work and study at the same time, with academic lessons carried out remotely during allocated study periods while on placement. This is recognised by the University as a placement and offers you a quicker way to complete your studies and gain work experience in 3 rather than 4 years, while graduating with 'placement' in your degree title to boost your employment prospects.

Live projects

As part of the course, you get the opportunity to work on real business projects to build your skills and professional experience. Recent students have contributed to developing the network of the UK Overseas Territories Conservation Forum, helped organise their annual conference in Gibraltar, and been involved in developing Operation Make Safe, which seeks to work with hotels, tour and transport operators to raise staff awareness of child protection issues.

Networking opportunities

You will frequently engage with tourism industry stakeholders throughout the course. Many modules include industry guest speakers and you will benefit from a close relationship with the industry through our staff members' industry network, association with the Tourism Management Institute, and alumni network.
