Analyse the dynamics of human rights abuses in the context of violent conflict – both domestic and international. Key course content includes:

  • international legal, political, and philosophical frameworks and approaches to human rights
  • dynamics of human rights abuses in conflict
  • potential responses to protect individuals from human rights abuses in conflict, including the use of force
  • international criminal justice mechanisms
  • transitional justice
  • humanitarianism

This course will introduce you to theoretical approaches from the disciplines of international relations and international law.  At the same time, you will consider key practical and ethical issues and frameworks, and apply them to a range of cases.

You will develop key research skills which provide a foundation for both academic work but also for work in a variety of institutional settings.

At Dundee, you will be taught in small seminars and will interact closely with core research and teaching staff.

This course will prepare you for a variety of exciting job opportunities, including with non-governmental organisations, international governmental organisations (such as the United Nations or European Union), foreign ministries, or in the private sector.

The course also provides excellent preparation for undertaking further postgraduate study, such as a PhD, with a view to a full-time career in academic or research.
