Neuroscience is the study of the brain and the rest of the nervous system in humans and other animals.

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE

YEAR 1

You will be given a general introduction to all aspects of modern biology and encouraged to acquire general scientific skills.

Core courses (2 x 20 credits)

YEAR 2

You will develop your knowledge of fundamental aspects of biology and be introduced to specialist subject areas according to your interests (e.g. animal biology; biomolecular sciences; human biology; infection biology).

Core courses (2 x 30 credits)

  • FUNDAMENTAL TOPICS IN BIOLOGY 2
  • HUMAN BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES 2

Plus optional courses (60 credits) - these can be Biology courses or courses from other subject areas, for example:

Semester one

  • CONTEMPORARY ISSUES IN BIOLOGY 2

Semester two

  • ANIMAL BIOLOGY, EVOLUTION AND ECOLOGY 2
  • GENES, MOLECULES & CELLS 2

YEAR 3

If you progress to Honours, in year 3 you will take courses that will provide you with an overview of human biology, the central nervous system, molecular biology and developmental biology.

You will also have lectures specific to your chosen area of interest, and practical workshops in neuroscience.

MSCI YEAR

Work placement (120 credits)

Neuroscience can be taken as an MSci degree, which includes an additional placement year between the third and final years of the degree, normally spent undertaking research in industry in the UK or overseas.

YEAR 4/5

In year 4 you will study four specialised neuroscience-related topics chosen from the Honours options. You will also complete a research project carried out under the supervision of a member of academic staff.

During the programme you will gain hands-on experience of practical techniques including experimental design, ways of gathering data and statistical analysis of data. You will also develop personal skills in collecting and presenting information in formal and informal environments.

The list of available final-year optional courses is subject to change each year. In addition, places in optional courses may be limited so students are not guaranteed a place on a particular final-year option.
