This degree in game design and game development provides the creative and technical skills you need for a career in video game design.

This games design and development degree combines all the aspects of theory, practice and technology essential to your career. You'll learn how to script languages such as JavaScript, C# and C++. You'll also discover the creative aspects of the games industry through practical projects which help to build transferable skills alongside your development skills.

This degree is ideal preparation for careers in the thriving video games industry. Past students have been employed in Triple A studios such as Sega, Rare, Konami and Media Molecule as well as in smaller independent studios.

Careers and placements

Will I have a work placement?

You can opt to register on 'sandwich mode' which means you can do a one year, full time, paid placement in between your second and final year. Whilst on a sandwich placement you retain your student status and have full support from the University and your tutors as normal. Students are responsible for finding their own placements though we will support you through the application process.

Former Games and Digital Media students have secured placement years at Kent Connects, Orange Games and Affiliate Window.

How long is my placement?

Sandwich placements must last for a minimum of 36 weeks full-time, though they can be as long as 13 months.

What are the financial arrangements?

Sandwich placements are normally paid, full time positions. The salary should reflect the going rate for an entry level role in the relevant industry.

What sort of careers do graduates pursue?

Career destinations include the independent and mobile games sectors as programmers, modellers and designers, the Augmented, Virtual and Mixed reality developers, UI and UX designers for digital media and games, games content creators and deliverers, backend developers and content managers.

Recent positions secured by Games Design and Digital Media graduates include Motion Capture Technican at The Imagianarium Studios, Serious Games Developer at Arup, Software Engineer at Bossa Studios, and Creative Product Specialist at Celtra.

Are internships available?

Students are encouraged to gain relevant work experience if possible, including internships, and can be paid or unpaid. Students are responsible for finding their own internships, though we will support you through the application process.

Do you provide employability services?

Employability activities take place all the time at Greenwich and students are encouraged to take part in as many opportunities as possible.

The central Employability and Careers Service provides support for students preparing to apply for placements and graduate roles, such as CV clinics, mock interviews and employability skills workshops.

Each School also has its own Employability Officer who provides specific opportunities relevant to your own course. They work closely with professionals in the industry to ensure you are well-prepared for the workplace and have already begun to build your professional network by the time you graduate.
