Study our midwifery course for high-quality teaching and placement opportunities.
Our midwifery degree will prepare you for a career as a registered midwife. You will learn to recognise the biomedical changes of pregnancy and childbirth, as well as the influences on the mental, social and emotional wellbeing of expectant mothers.
In 2018, the quality of our teaching staff was recognised at the British Journal of Midwifery awards, with our midwifery team winning first prize for their contribution to midwifery education.
We have strong links with placement providers in settings ranging from women's homes to hospitals and community clinics. We will prepare you to apply for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) and you will gain the skills needed to achieve the NMC Standards for Pre-registration Midwifery Education (2009).
What you should know about this course
Careers and placements
Will I have a work placement?
We are proud of our strong links with placement providers. Our placements are in a variety of settings, from women's homes to hospital placements and community clinics. You will also get the opportunity to care for women giving birth at home, in birth centres and in labour wards.
In order to develop multi-professional and collaborative working, during our three-year degree we offer shared learning between midwifery and nursing students. You will develop the skills of an autonomous practitioner, working closely with other members of the multidisciplinary team in hospitals and the local community. Shared learning will be in areas such as biological and social sciences, professional values, ethics, research and informatics.
How long is my placement?
You will be placed in one NHS trust for the three-year programme, although you will have the opportunity to change your placement area for part of Year 3.
During Year 1, you will explore the fundamental clinical and interpersonal skills needed for midwifery. The emphasis will be on uncomplicated pregnancy, childbirth and motherhood, and on supporting women through a normal life event. You will be encouraged to appreciate women's experiences in the context of their own lives.
Years 2 and 3 focus on care for women whose pregnancies become complicated.
What sort of careers do graduates pursue?
Throughout your degree, we prepare you to apply for registration as midwives with The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). One of the main aims of our degree is to help you achieve the outcomes identified in the NMC Standards for Pre-registration Midwifery Education (2009).
These include having the competencies required to achieve the NMC Standards (Standard 17), the Essential Skills Clusters for Pre-registration Midwifery Education and the requirements of Directive 2005/36/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council (2005), Articles 40 and 42.
We also support our students to develop the principles and values contained within Leading Care, Adding Value (NHS England 2016), Better Births (National Maternity Services Review 2016).
Employment opportunities exist in midwifery in institutional and community settings and also in research, management and education.
Do you provide employability services?
