Breadth of expertise

The interests of our staff and PhD students are extremely diverse and span the medieval, early modern and modern periods.

Their work encompasses political, social, cultural, economic, military and diplomatic history, across Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia and the Americas.

Active seminar programmes, linked to our research centres and MA programmes, enable staff and postgraduates to present their work and listen to eminent visiting speakers.

Career prospects

Our MA degrees are designed to provide students with a wide range of transferable skills. Our taught programmes are designed to meet the training requirements of the AHRC and the ESRC and thus to equip you for further study towards an MPhil/PhD. However, our MA students go into a wide range of professions, including media, public sector management and school teaching, as well as academia.

This course will appeal to you whether you want to study for the MA or progress further towards a PhD. There are special modules covering theory, methodology, and research skills, which prepare students for a wide variety of careers, including those working on topics related to slavery, abolition, resistance and their commemoration.
