Course Details
The programme will build your understanding of contemporary economics both in the UK and overseas whilst providing you with practical skills and knowledge that will enhance your future employability. Upon completion of the Economics and Accounting Joint Honours programme you will be able to progress your career in business, government or politics or financial organisations stretching across any sector or industry.
This programme combines economics and accounting modules that will provide you with a key grounding in both subject areas. Economics is an interesting and varied subject area that will develop your analytical skills whilst accounting encompasses a wide range of activities and is an integral aspect of business life in all sectors and across nations.
Stage one
You will be introduced to macro and micro-economics and build your understanding of interpreting economic data. You will explore ways in which entrepreneurial opportunities can be identified and developed and be introduced to the conceptual issues which underpin accounting. You will build your understanding of accounting information systems and will start to learn some of the techniques and skills required.
Stage two
You will further develop your understanding of macro and micro economics to an intermediate level and learn how Economists model problems quantitatively. Within accounting you will concentrate heavily on corporate reporting, management accounting and the role of the accountant in organisational decision making. During year two you can select which other modules you wish to study and you can tailor this depending on your interests.
Optional Work Placement Year
Whilst on your Optional Work Placement Year you will study a 40 credit module ‘The Placement Year Experience – Organisations in Context’. We offer a lot of support in helping you to find a placement, which can be in the UK or overseas.
Stage three
In year three you will undertake your dissertation. Your dissertation can focus on economics or accounting or you can write an interdisciplinary dissertation joining both subjects together. You will explore the current debates in economic policy and strategic management. You will be able to study the more strategic and specialist areas of accounting and finance including financial services, banking, investment management and insurance.
During year three you can select which other modules you wish to study and you can tailor this depending on your interests.
