If you’d like to pursue a career as a journalist, this multi-disciplinary course combines practical training in radio, TV, newspaper, magazine and online journalism with academic study and is the perfect foundation.

We will support you to achieve your career and study ambitions, which is why if you complete our Employability Plus Gold programme or Changemaker Gold certificate alongside your studies and if you haven’t secured full-time employment 12 months after graduating* we will secure a three – six month paid internship for you, or support you into postgraduate study.

Course Details

Throughout the course, you will have the opportunity to study print, online and broadcast journalism practices, aspects of law, ethics and professional practice. In order for you to be successful in your journalism career, the course is underpinned by modules exploring and honing writing techniques and skills.

Your studies will be reinforced by opportunities to get involved with regular student publications and websites, consolidating what you have learned through your course.

You will develop a critical understanding of the professional skills you will need as a journalist, in a world where communication technologies play an increasingly central role.

We are happy to announace that our Multimedia Journalism programme is accredited by the Broadcast Journalism Training Council.

Methods of Learning

For this course taught study will be a combination of lectures, seminars and practical workshops for around 16 contact hours per week. We recommend you spend 12 hours per week in self-directed study time.

Practical work is project-based and you will be writing and sub-editing newspaper and magazine copy, producing radio and television bulletins with reports and packages to industry standards and deadlines.

You will study 15 different modules over three years. Each year this will include a law and ethics module.

Assessments

You will be assessed through a variety of methods, including practical portfolios, essays, reports on seminars, presentations, practical projects and written examinations.

University of Northampton Application Process

Basic Admission Requirements

  1. Certified transcripts of high school/college/university
  2. One reference required
  3. Statement of Purpose depicting the interest of the applicant in the chosen course
  4. MBA applicants must also have a proof of work experience
  5. Arts and design applicant must also submit their portfolio 

The outcomes of the English proficiency tests taken by all of the international applicants. IELTS, TOEFL iBT, and Pearson PTE are acceptable tests. The minimal IELTS scores needed to get admitted are as follows:
