Course Details

This course places a strong emphasis on the application of theories and concepts to practical issues such as the barriers to sport participation and the teaching of sports coaching. The course covers issues and methods of enquiry in present-day psychology and its applications to areas such as work, education, physical and mental health and crime.

The programme provides useful experience for those intending to work in a range of career areas from mentoring to sport coaching. The course will also provide you with the skills to go on to further study and conduct in-depth research within these subjects.

The modular curriculum allows study of key disciplines in Sport Studies and Psychology.  As well as gaining a valuable degree, students will also have the opportunity to attain various professional qualifications and work experience outside of the taught degree programme through work and volunteering placements. After graduating, you will be equipped with transferable critical and analytical skills which will greatly enhance your employability.

Alongside developing your understanding and evaluation of sport in its many forms you will learn new ways of understanding how and why people think and act as they do. The course provides a progressive programme of study; the programme ensures you maintain flexibility and choice throughout your three years of study.

Full time students take a set amount of modules for each stage for three years. Some modules are mandatory whilst others are selected from a wide range of options. In stage one important core ideas, evidence and methods are introduced. This basic knowledge is built upon in stages two and three to foster a cutting-edge understanding of topics.

Partnerships and Accreditation

If you choose to major in Psychology and complete the required modules, you will earn a degree that is accredited by the British Psychological Society, conferring the Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC).

Methods of Learning

Teaching methods include lectures, seminars, tutorials, practical and laboratory workshops, computer assisted learning, independent and group work. Discussion and student participation is encouraged. Practical work will represent an important component of your course in each of the three years of study.
