We make music studies relevant for today’s musicians. Through our modern approaches to composition, performance, writing and production, you’ll develop the skills to shape the future of music. You’ll gain a critical understanding of music across a range of genres and you’ll explore how music contributes to society.

Grounded in practical know-how, the BA is taught by composers, performers and musicologists, celebrated for their work on contemporary music, film scores, popular music, opera and the live stage, and sound installations.

You can tailor your degree to what inspires you most with a range of options. These include ensemble performance, solo performance tuition, songwriting, music history, music technology and media. You’ll study in a great environment for music-making with:

  • masterclasses and concerts
  • 24-hour access to practice rooms and studios, including the Attenborough Centre for the Creative Arts and our Jonathan Harvey Electronic Music Studio.

Your future career

At Sussex, you’re given the chance to develop further real-world skills outside the classroom. You can join a band or music society, show off your musical skills in our symphony orchestra, and produce a portfolio to show to employers.

You’ll learn how to use industry-standard software and equipment including music and editing packages.

This means you’re prepared for a range of careers including composition, performance, radio, publishing, teaching, and arts administration.
