We are pioneering exciting developments in social sciences. Whether it's changing policy on human trafficking, or tackling body image issues in our Centre for Appearance Research (CAR), our research is changing lives. This course enables you to be part of that.

Why study this course?

This flexible course will deepen your understanding of your specialist area through undertaking a practical or theoretical extended research project, making up two thirds of the course. This is supported by an integral programme of advanced research methods training. If you're working, you can tailor research to your workplace.

After developing a solid grounding in academic research practice, you will focus your research in one of the following specialisms:

  • Criminology
  • Environmental Health
  • Philosophy
  • Politics and International Relations
  • Public Health
  • Psychology
  • Sociology.

Although there is plenty of autonomy, you will be supported throughout your course by your supervisor.

Why UWE Bristol?

Whatever your research focus, you'll have access to our well-equipped facilities to test your hypotheses, with laboratories for eye tracking and electroencephalography (EEG) as well as sports and exercise analysis. Your desk-based research will be enhanced by our excellent library facilities and comprehensive learning resources.

You'll develop your academic profile by engaging with our expert staff, and have the chance to collaborate on innovative projects with our partners, including the NHS and Dove. You'll also have opportunities to generate ideas, seek out collaborators, and gain support in writing proposals and publications through working with our research groups - studying topics from global security to Philosophy.

Where it can take you

On graduation, you will have advanced skills in design, data collection and analysis, and a strong understanding and evidence base in your area of interest. You can also use credits towards a PhD, so you can continue to deepen your knowledge and research experience.
