In 1883, Jacksonville, Alabama saw the establishment of Jacksonville State University (JSU), a public research institution. Formerly known as Jacksonville State Normal School, the institution changed its name once, to Jacksonville State Teachers College, in 1930. It then changed its name again, to Jacksonville State College, in 1957, and started operating as a university in 1966.
