David Chigos, the founder of the National University and a retired lieutenant commander in the United States Navy, saw the need for a non-traditional university education model with in-demand and pertinent degree programmes to meet the needs of working adults. Chigos was also the director of employee training for General Dynamics Corporation in San Diego. The National University was established as a private, non-profit institution in November 1971 with 27 students who were enrolled in courses in 1972. 143 students attended The National's first commencement ceremony. The university bought two properties on Camino del Rio in Mission Valley in 1975. It put up facilities in places like Kearny Mesa two years later, in 1977, and then moved into San Diego County. The university has 1,000 alumni at that time.
