New York Institute of Technology English Language Requirments

• English Proficiency: Applicants are required to submit the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), as administered by the Educational Testing Service, the Pearson PTE Academic Exam, the Duolingo English Test, or an examination determined by the Office of Admissions to be equivalent.
  • Full Undergraduate Admission: The following minimum scores required for full admission to undergraduate programs are:
    • IELTS score: 6.0
    • TOEFL (iBT) score: 79
    • Pearson PTE score: 53
    • Duolingo score: 105
  • Undergraduate English as a Second Language (ESL) Pathway Admission: Students who do not meet all admission requirements for English proficiency may be admitted to an ESL pathway programme. The following scores are required for admission to an ESL pathway programme for undergraduates:
    • IELTS scores: below 6.0 (5.0–5.5)
    • TOEFL (iBT) scores: 41–78
    • Pearson PTE scores: 36–52
    • Duolingo scores: 70–104
    • Students with these scores will be required to take non-credit English as a Second Language (ESL) courses, but they will also have the option to enrol in academic courses for credit. Other courses may be dropped for students whose registration does not include the required English course(s).
    • Pathway admissions requirements apply to programmes that are eligible for the pathway. Program-specific eligibility requirements are determined by individual academic departments.
  • Conditional Admission: If all other academic requirements are met, applicants with IELTS scores below 5.0, TOEFL (iBT) scores below 61, Pearson PTE scores below 40, or Duolingo scores below 70 may be offered conditional admission to the academic programme. Students offered conditional admission are eligible to enrol in the ESL Pathway Program. Full admission to the academic programme requires completion of the programme.
