Northern Illinois University English Language Requirment

Northern Illinois University (NIU) has specific English language proficiency requirements for international applicants who are non-native English speakers. These requirements ensure that students have the necessary language skills to succeed in their academic studies.

The primary way to demonstrate English proficiency at NIU is by providing acceptable scores on one of the following standardized English language proficiency tests:

1. Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL): NIU accepts both the internet-based TOEFL (iBT) and the paper-based TOEFL (PBT). The minimum required scores are as follows:
   • iBT TOEFL: 80 overall, with a minimum score of 17 in each section.
