About Santa Clara University

Santa Clara University (SCU) was established in 1851 by John Nobili, S.J. as a boys' preparatory school called Santa Clara College. It started delivering college courses in 1853 and by 1875 had more than 275 students enrolled. The college was expanded with law and engineering schools in 1912, and it then changed its name to the Universidad of Santa Clara. In 1961, the school admitted 75 female students, making it California's first Catholic co-educational university. In 1985, it received its present name.

The university is currently accredited by the WASC Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC), and a number of prestigious organisations have given their seal of approval to its various programmes.
