In Nacogdoches, Texas, there is a public institution called Stephen F. Austin State University. This university, founded in 1923, is not connected to any of Texas' six university systems. The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools has accredited this university's bachelor's, master's, and doctorate programmes. There are six colleges at this university. The Nelson Rusche College of Business houses departments for accounting, economics, finance, management, and marketing as well as a master's programme in business administration. The Elementary Education Department, Human Services Department, Secondary Education & Educational Leadership Department, and School of Human Sciences are all parts of the James I. Perkins College of Education.

The Schools of Art, Music, and Theatre are all part of the College of Fine Arts. The College of Liberal and Applied Arts offers courses in diverse fields such anthropology, geography, sociology, mass communication, military science, psychology, social work, and history, languages, cultures, and governance. Also available at this university are specialised labs like the one for nuclear magnetic resonance, the one for anthropology and archaeology, and the one for soil, plant, and water analysis.
