Syracuse University English Language Requirment
English proficiency exam score reports must be sent directly to the University from the testing service.
Due to the closure of TOEFL and IELTS testing sites as a result of the coronavirus, we are currently accepting the Duolingo English Test for spring/fall 2023. This alternative is convenient, quick, and inexpensive. The examination can be taken anywhere with a computer and a peaceful work area.
When requesting your official TOEFL scores from ETS, use ID code 2823. Please note that currently, Syracuse University does not accept "MyBest" TOEFL results to satisfy English proficiency criteria; students who submit the TOEFL must meet our requirements within one exam session. Currently, Syracuse University accepts the At Home option for the TOEFL exam. The TOEFL Essentials or ITP exam, TOEFL My Best Score, and IELTS Indicator are not recognised as evidence of English competence.
Colleges vary in their preferred TOEFL, IELTS, Cambridge, and Duolingo scores (see chart below). In addition, Syracuse University will evaluate PTE Academic results for English proficiency at the admissions committee's discretion.

Request to Waive the English Language Proficiency Requirement
The English proficiency exam requirement may be waived in certain situations at the discretion of the Admissions Committee. Your application supporting documentation will be reviewed to determine whether or not you qualify for a waiver; if it is approved, it will be reflected accordingly on your application checklist in your applicant portal.
Waiver approval is not guaranteed, so it is recommended that you take the TOEFL, IELTS, Cambridge, or PTE Academic as part of the application process if your native language is not English.
