The University of Kentucky, founded in 1865, is an open, coeducational institution affiliated with the Southeastern Universities Research Association. The Agricultural and Mechanical College of Kentucky was its previous name. In 1916, it was granted university status. The university is also recognised as one of the biggest in the state. In 1885, the university established an agriculture experiment station, which carried out research on the agricultural industry, nutrition, food processing, environment, soil resources, and water. The institution first started awarding master's degrees in 1876. It was the country's first research facility. The College of Home Economics was established in the same year, while the College of Commerce was established in 1925.

The campus has a total land area of around 784 acres. It has seven dining facilities and 23 housing halls. Over 200 student-run organisations are housed there. The Patterson Office Tower, Chandler Hospital, Administrative Block, Student Center, and Alumni Gym are a few of the important structures that are situated on the campus. In addition, there are nine notable libraries on campus: the Design Library, the Education Library, the Law Library, the Agricultural Information Centre, the Fine Arts Library, the Science & Engineering Library, the Medical Center Library, the William T Young Library, and the Special Collections Research Centre. Additionally, the homes offer all the amenities needed for students. They discover a calm learning atmosphere. The management keeps the residence halls in good condition. The campus is close to a lot of cafes and eateries. Additionally nearby are department stores, ATMs, stationery stores, and pharmacies. The university has easy access to public transportation.
