As Tampa Junior College, the University of Tampa got its start in 1931. In 1933, the University of Tampa was given its current name. The original name of the university building, which had 5 stories and 511 rooms and was constructed between 1888 and 1891, was Tampa Bay Hotel.

Today, it is a cutting-edge campus with labs, executive offices, and lecture halls. It offers almost 200 programmes, including three 4+1 programmes, two certificates, 16 master's, 1 doctorate, and 10 concentrations. The institution comprises four colleges: Sykes College of Business, College of Natural and Health Sciences, College of Social Sciences, Mathematics, and Education, and College of Arts and Letters.
