About DePaul University

Archbishop Feehan urged the Congregation of the Mission, also known as Vincentians, to establish DePaul University as St. Vincent's College on 30 June 1898. On September 5 of the same year, classes commenced in the St. Vincent's Church building. Initially, the college had approximately 70 students, seven faculty members, and no president.

Rev. Peter V. Byrne, C.M. was appointed the first president on January 2, 1899. The St. Vincent's College name was changed to DePaul University on December 24, 1907. The name was derived from St. Vincent de Paul, the founder of the Mission Congregation. The university is currently accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC). Additionally, a number of its programmes are accredited by various prestigious organisations.
