University of Missouri English Language Requirment

The University of Missouri expect international students to know English well enough to:

  • comprehend lectures;
  • participate in discussions;
  • read textbooks;
  • write effectively.

To establish your English proficiency, you must do one of the following:

  • Earn the required score on the Duolingo English Test (DET), Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), International English Language Testing System (IELTS) exam, Cambridge English B2 First, C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency or Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE), or
  • Complete Level 5 of the MU Intensive English Program, or
  • Complete the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) English exam with grade of B or higher, or
  • Score a 5 or higher on the International Baccalaureate (IB) English A: Language & Literature HL exam.

Duolingo English Test (DET)

In order to meet Mizzou’s English language requirements, international students must earn a minimum DET score of 100 on the online test with 3 of the 4 section scores at or above a 90.

Many schools and colleges at Mizzou require higher DET scores.

*In the School of Health Professions, the Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences major requires an English score equal to that required for the School of Journalism.

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)

In order to meet Mizzou’s English language requirements, international students must earn a minimum TOEFL score of 79 on the online test with no section score below 17.

Many schools and colleges at Mizzou require higher TOEFL scores.

*In the School of Health Professions, the Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences major requires an English score equal to that required for the School of Journalism.

Many schools and colleges at Mizzou require higher Cambridge English B2 First, C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency scores.
