About University of Pittsburgh

The Pittsburgh Academy, now known as the Institution of Pittsburgh, was first founded in 1787 and is a renowned public research university in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in the United States. In 1908, the institution changed its name to The University of Pittsburgh after relocating to its present site in the city's Oakland area. Up until 1966, when it joined the Commonwealth System of Higher Education, it was a private university. On its urban Pittsburgh site, it has 17 undergraduate and graduate schools and colleges. Pittsburgh is one of 63 premier doctorate-granting research universities in North America that make up the esteemed Association of American Universities (AAU). Pittsburgh has long been renowned for its top-tier liberal arts education and achievements in the sciences, research, humanities, and other fields.

The 145-acre campus can house 23,466 full-time undergraduate students, 1,087 part-time undergraduate students, 7,280 full-time graduate/doctoral students, and 1,911 part-time graduate/doctoral students. The institution got research funds from the National Institutes of Health in 2018, ranking third among American universities in terms of federally sponsored health research funding.

According to the National Science Foundation, the organisation spent $1 billion on R&D in 2018, ranking it 14th in the country. Leading magazines have named the university as the "best value" in higher education and one of the top research universities. 17 libraries on the Pittsburgh campus have over 1.5 million books. The university has the 22nd-largest library system in the country.

The school places a strong emphasis on athletics, and its teams participate in the NCAA Division I Atlantic Coast Conference.
