The Pittsburgh Academy, now known as the Institution of Pittsburgh, was first founded in 1787 and is a renowned public research university in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in the United States. In 1908, the institution changed its name to The University of Pittsburgh after relocating to its present site in the city's Oakland area. Up until 1966, when it joined the Commonwealth System of Higher Education, it was a private university. On its urban Pittsburgh site, it has 17 undergraduate and graduate schools and colleges. The university has the 22nd-largest library system in the country.
